Former Vice President Joe Biden has given his support to Danica Roem, a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates.

It is one more highlight of her record-setting run to unseat Bob Marshall, a staunchly anti-LGBT Republican.

“Former Vice President Joe Biden’s endorsement signifies the importance of this race not just to Virginia, but to the entire nation,” said Victory Fund President and CEO Aisha C. Moodie-Mills.

“Danica Roem is transcending the divisive politics of today by knocking on doors and focusing on issues that will improve the lives of her constituents. Yet a win for Danica will also send a powerful message to elected officials nationwide: LGBTQ people will target and run against those who attack our community, and we will remove them from power.”

Roem is a Democrat from Prince William County and would become the first openly transgender Virginian elected to state office.

A victory for her would also serve to end or weaken the Republicans 16-year majority in the chamber. In September 2017,

Roem posted a web video “Just Who I Am” where she pushes back against her opponent’s refusal to debate her or to refer to her as a woman. She says, “There are millions of transgender people in the country, and we all deserve representation in government.

Roem’s campaign received reports that residents of her district were receiving anti-transgender robocalls. Roem said the calls were being made by the American Principles Project, which has circulated a petition to “Stop Transgender Medical Experimentation on Children

Joe Biden and his endorsement is a welcome boost to her campaign.
