House of Cards star Kevin Spacey says he doesn’t remember making a sexual advance towards a teenage boy but has apologised for his actions.
But a storm has blown up over Spacey choosing to come out as gay and apologising for sexual assault and conflating both matters as an excuse.
Anthony Rapp, best known for starring in the musical Rent and Star Trek: Discovery, told BuzzFeed he was invited to a party at Spacey’s apartment in 1986 when he was just 14 and said, Spacey, then 26, put him on his bed and climbed on top of him at the end of the night.
Rapp, who is now 46, spoke out following accusations of sexual harassment against American film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Spacey released a statement following Rapp’s accusations and apologised for any misconduct.
“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor,” he said.
“I’m beyond horrified to hear his story.
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
‘I choose now to live as a gay man’
Spacey said the allegations made him address other issues in his life.
“I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fuelled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy,” he said.
“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women.
“I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.
“I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behaviour.”
‘He was trying to seduce me’
Rapp told BuzzFeed: “He [Spacey] picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold.
“But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me.
“He was trying to seduce me.
“I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Rapp said he pushed Spacey off him and left the apartment, confused as to what had happened.
“The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn’t happen,” he said.
“And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can’t believe it.
“I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.”
