Sarah Hyland has clarified that although she believes her Modern Family character Haley Dunphy is bisexual, the show currently has nothing in the pipeline to suggest so.
“That’s just my personal opinion!” she tweeted.
The 26-year-old star was responding to a fan on Twitter who asked whether it was true, to which she replied: “I don’t know what the writers would say? But I confirm.”
The ABC comedy show’s creator Steve Levitan has yet to respond to Hyland’s tweet, but fans shared their delight on Twitter.
One wrote: “Yay! Go Sarah! I’m bi and proud.”
Over the past nine Modern Family seasons, Hyland’s dramatic love life has been a focus of many a storyline, and Hayley has had nine boyfriends – starting with goofy on/off childhood sweetheart Dylan (played by Reid Ewing).
Another significant on-screen boyfriend has been former manny Andy (played by Adam DeVine). There are 16 new episodes to come in season nine (with the tenth run potentially being its last), but it’s yet to be confirmed whether they might explore her sexuality.
Meanwhile, Hyland has also been hitting out over reports she’s had plastic surgery, releasing the following statement on Twitter: “I have had the worst medical year of my life and to create an entire article surrounding the question if I’d had plastic surgery is the MOST insulting thing.
