Australians have voted decisively in favour of marriage equality in an ultimately non-binding survey. Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull said “The people have voted yes for marriage equality. Now it is our job to deliver it.”
Following the result which saw a higher percentage of people voting than in the US presidential election, Mr Turnbull said he wanted a bill before parliament within weeks. Politicians will be given a free vote, but Conservatives have a long list of demands.
A new report by Human Rights Watch details the use of electric shock therapy to ‘cure’ gay people in China. Pressure to produce grandchildren & avoid family shame are cited as key reasons, with the country’s one-child policy only being relaxed last year.
A man who was denied asylum in Germany after describing the persecution of gay people in Chechnya has now retracted his claims. In an apology shown on Chechen TV, Movsar Eskershanov, looking ill & stressed, said he was drugged by Western journalists and told what to say.
And finally, celebrities took to social media overnight to celebrate Australia’s momentous result. Kylie Minogue tweeted ‘Love is love, always was love, always will be love’ while Justin Trudeau wrote, ‘Love wins in Australia.’
