“You’ve got no dignity, Muriel.”

Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical has opened in Sydney to critical acclaim.

A joint production between the Sydney Theatre Company and Global Creatures, the new show shrewdly brings its heroine into the present day, by making her a selfie-obsessed, follower-counting millennial.

Newcomer Maggie McKenna takes the lead role, with ABBA lookalikes bringing the supergroup’s original movie soundtrack to life.

Muriel’s loneliness and her desperation to present a picture-perfect life, online, makes her transplantation to 2017 utterly convincing…

…and following Australia’s recent support for marriage equality, the focus of Muriel’s affections eventually professes a soft spot for British Olympic diver, Tom Daley and the films of Baz Luhrmann.

The play was written as a book by the 1994 movie’s writer-director P.J Hogan following the film’s original huge success and its on-going popularity, over twenty years later.

“You know, I wrote something that I knew a lot about, which was a failure.”

“I’m trying to become more like you. More of a…”
“It’s too late.”
“I can change.”
“You’ll still be you!”

1994 original launched the international careers of Toni Colette and Rachel Griffiths, who each went on to enjoy huge success in Hollywood.

The film tells the story of Muriel Heslop, an outcast at school, who dreams of being the envy of the popular girls by having a fairytale wedding and spawned some great quotes which are still getting used today.

“You’re terrible Muriel!”

“Oh, by the way, I’m not alone, I’m with Muriel.”
“You’ve got no dignity, Muriel.”
“Deirdre Chambers! What a coincidence.”
“Im a bride. I’m supposed to be euphoric.”
“Let her finish her Orgasm.”
“Slurps”

The film was staggered with songs by Swedish pop sensation, ABBA, reviving interest in their songbook, which barely waned in Australia, and which was boosted by their soundtrack to Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, released the same year.

Priscilla went on to conquer the world as a stage musical and it looks like Muriel’s Wedding may enjoy the same success.
