Today’s LGBTIQ FESTIVE SPECIAL from PINKSIXTY features the work of LAMBDA LEGAL.
Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest US legal organisation advocating for the civil rights of LGBTi people and those living with HIV. Founded in 1973, the group advocates for public policy at local, state and federal levels.
In 1983, Lambda Legal won America’s first HIV/AIDS discrimination case, securing insurance cover for people disabled as a result of the disease. The lawsuit also forced insurance companies to cover HIV testing and treatments and guarantee privacy.
In 2003, Lambda Legal persuaded the Supreme Court to overturn all state sodomy laws, after previous success in getting them overturned in 5 states. It marked a fundamental change in the legal landscape, scoring a massive victory for LGBTi rights.
In 2015, Lambda was co-counsel in one of the cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, resulting in the momentous decision that allowed same-sex couples the right to marry across all states.
And this year, Lambda Legal joined with Out-Serve SLDN to oppose President Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military. On December 11th a court in Seattle ordered an immediate halt to the ban after hearing a challenge from Lambda.
